Being scared, isn’t fun, being sad, isn’t enjoyable, being angry, isn’t pleasurable, these things are obvious. But what might not be obvious to you, is that, when you notice that you are feeling these specific feelings, you should recognize and try to understand them. You might be saying now, wait… I shouldn’t try to get rid of this feeling? Correct, that’s exactly what I’m saying, do not get rid of this feeling RIGHT AWAY. Part of becoming more present in your life is noticing the types of feelings you are having and how your body is handling those feelings. Example: You are stressed out for a game, and have an upset stomach. Once you scan these emotions, you know where they are deferring into the body and can embrace the thought into something more positive. Example: This upcoming game is really going to challenge me, and I am looking forward to it. This leads to becoming excited, thinking as the upset stomach as butterflies and the thought can really change the way you are feeling. — “Mindfulness we can use to get the distance to consider all the options and reattach to the belief that’s most useful”. -Dr. Eddie O’Connor Sport Psychologist
The reason we don’t want to get rid of the feeling right away is that, well, it doesn’t actually disappear. You dismissed the feeling further into your brain and body. This is what causes people to eventually lash out. Holding emotions in and ignoring them, is bringing you less present, and more negative. And why would you want either of those?
So, periodically throughout the day, you should check up on yourself to see how you are feeling. And see how you can capitalize on good emotion, and understand negative emotions in order to redirect them. Like if you enjoyed and comment other topics you’d like me to write about (:
