You’re not alone! Uncertainty is all we are seeing on tv, social media, everywhere. Many people have faced losses during this time, family, friends, and more, to a virus. The virus has also taken away people’s happy places, sporting events, concerts, and so much more. What do we do? How do we handle this? How can we continue to grow and move forward? These are all questions being asked around the world. So what do you do? Small things. If you’re an athlete, you could be missing an entire season right now. But there is a way to make up for it – just hear me out. (The best part of it is you can use it for pretty much anything!)
VISUALIZATION!
You’re missing a sporting event: Imagine yourself there; with the exact team you were going to face, the exact field, any equipment that may be around you, the fans standing around. Imagine yourself and your teammates playing together. Imagine the moves that you would make to block someone, make a touchdown, score a goal, or pass to your teammate. Imagine what you WANT to accomplish during this specific game, and make it happen because then you have made an accomplishment in your mind. When that feeling of accomplishment sets in, you feel good and prepared. You want to be prepared for whatever may come your way next, and this is how to do it.
This is the best idea for an athlete during this time. Because not only are you imagining continuing to play, you are setting up the framework to actually perform in real life that way!
You’re missing a concert: Imagine the stands, the cheers, the excitement. Play that artist’s music in the background so you can feel like you’re there.
During this time of uncertainty, ONLY YOU have the control to take advantage of what YOU get out of it. Every day you should set an intention to visualize something you miss doing or a place you miss going too. Because we are not sure when this virus will end, if it’ll come back, or what it could do to us. Visualization is a great way to keep yourself happy and satisfied while being bored at home. And it is even better for athletes because you’re training your mind.
But, be aware that this process doesn’t happen perfectly the first few times around. It requires practice to be able to visualize better, and really convince your mind that you can accomplish what you have during your visual performance.
